☆ ‘Hills of California’ Review: A Stage Mother’s Unhappy Brood

In Jez Butterworth’s new play, we — the audience and protagonists alike — are kept waiting and wondering. It’s the summer of 1976 and Britain is in the midst of a heat wave. They must decide whether to put her out of her misery with a high dose of morphine, or let her continue to suffer. “The Hills of California,” written by Butterworth (“The Ferryman,” “Jerusalem”) and directed by Sam Mendes (“The Lehmann Trilogy”), runs at the Harold Pinter Theater in London, through June 15. Rob Howell’s impressive set makes the most of the playhouse’s nearly 40-foot grid height, with three flights of stairs leading up to the unseen guest rooms.

CNN —Jezebel, the punchy feminist blog with an outsized influence on internet culture, will suspend operations and lay off its staff effective immediately, its parent company G/O Media said Thursday as it announced broader restructuring in its portfolio of digital news outlets. “We have been operating over the last few quarters with an eye towards efficiency and being budget conscious. The cuts come as the broader media industry continues to struggle with a weak advertising climate. And across the media landscape, cost cutting and layoffs have been rampant over the past year. “Just about every company in our space has found themselves in similar circumstances,” Spanfeller said.

Both run six episodes, with “The English” structured as a limited series, and “Mammals” paving the way for future seasons, while incorporating too many twists in its dramedy format to discuss much about what happens. James Corden and Melia Kreiling in Amazon's dark comedy "Mammals." While both series should help bring attention to Amazon Prime, neither completely works. That said, there’s probably not enough strictly on their respective merits to lead either of these Amazon shows through the jungle and out of the woods. “Mammals” and “The English” premiere November 11 on Amazon Prime.
